Modern Apprenticeship in Dental Nursing
Workplace-based training that develops skilled, confident dental nurses.
The Modern Apprenticeship in Dental Nursing combines practical workplace experience with structured learning and assessment, enabling apprentices to develop the knowledge, skills and professional behaviours required to work safely and effectively within a dental practice.
Delivered by Dental Training Centre, the programme supports both employers and apprentices from enrolment through to successful completion. The apprenticeship is typically completed over 12 months and includes the mandatory SVQ and PDA qualifications.
What is a Modern Apprenticeship?
A Modern Apprenticeship allows apprentices to earn while they learn, gaining valuable experience as part of a dental team while working towards nationally recognised qualifications.
Throughout the programme, apprentices are employed within a dental practice and receive regular workplace assessment, professional guidance and structured learning to support their development.
Qualification Structure
The Modern Apprenticeship consists of two mandatory qualifications.
Scottish Vocational Qualification (SVQ) in Dental Nursing
The SVQ is a competence-based qualification that is assessed in the workplace.
Apprentices demonstrate their competence while carrying out their day-to-day role within a dental practice through a range of assessment methods, including:
✔ Workplace observations
✔ Professional discussions
✔ Witness testimony
✔ Product evidence
✔ Reflective accounts
Your dedicated assessor will visit the workplace regularly to support both the apprentice and employer throughout the programme. Assessment is carried out in the workplace and is based on the apprentice's normal duties.
Professional Development Award (PDA) in Dental Nursing
The PDA develops the theoretical knowledge that underpins safe and effective dental nursing practice.
Assessment is completed through four closed-book assessments, covering:
- Principles of Infection Prevention and Control
- Principles of Oral Health Assessment and Treatment Planning
- Dental Radiography
- Prevention and Management of Common Oral Diseases
How the Apprenticeship Works
Step 1
The apprentice is employed within a dental practice.
Step 2
Dental Training Centre enrols the apprentice onto the Modern Apprenticeship programme.
Step 3
The apprentice develops practical skills in the workplace while completing the SVQ and PDA.
Step 4
Regular workplace assessment, reviews and learner support take place throughout the programme.
Step 5
On successful completion, the apprentice achieves the Modern Apprenticeship and the associated qualifications. Successful completion of the SVQ and PDA meets the qualification requirements for applying to join the General Dental Council register as a dental nurse.
